Structural modelling for geographical information systems using icons

The purpose of a high level data model is to model a certain selection of real world phenomena as accurately, convincingly and completely as necessary and possible using various structuring and abstraction mechanisms and techniques. Geographical information is special because geographical location and spatial extent provides implicit spatial relationships between all geographically located phenomena. For geographical data we want to be able to model spatial characteristics in an intuitive and straightforward way. To accomplish this, special purpose extensions to general modelling methodologies have to be considered. The paper suggests that visual modelling of geographical information is aided by using icons to indicate spatial and geographical properties. Geographical icons could be applied in ER modelling, but should be particularly interesting in the context of UML stereotypes. In this paper, emphasis is put on providing intuitive and expressive icons for use in visual modelling. It builds on the sub model substitution (SMS) technique proposed by B edard. An example of icon usage for the OpenGIS Consortium Simple Feature Speci cation data types is presented to demonstrate the utility of the methodology.
